We will have one (1) match only and will receive our match details (i.e. opponent/time) closer to the season start.

All dates & events are subject to change with or without notice.

U14 Boys Rugby Team

The vast majority of U14 players are boys.  The league is officially coed, but most of the U14 girls will play in the weekly U14 Girls Only matches.

Our U14 Boys Pioneers will not train with our high school Barbarians.  However, they will learn the same laws, calls, plays and strategies as our high school players.

We will receive our schedule in March 2018.

If we do not have a full roster of players, we will be partnered with another club in a similar situation.  This partnering is allowed on the U14 Division in order to provide as positive an experience for all players as possible.

U14 Girls Rugby Team

The Senior (U14) division is coed and our U14 Boys Team may play against teams with both boys and girls.

Rugby Illinois has encouraged girls to play tackle rugby and schedules at least one U14 Girls Only match at each Middle School Festival.  We expect these teams to participate in U14 Girls Only matches:
Chicago Wapiti
Fox Valley Chiefs
Chillicothe Maulers
Naperville Crusaders
Palatine Pioneers
Rowe Middle School Rockets

Our U14 Girls Pioneers will train with our High School Mutts occasionally for non-contact drills in order to learn the same laws, calls, plays and strategies as our high school players.

U14 League Structure

Rugby Illinois offers tackle rugby to middle school players that are not 14 by July 1, 2017.  There are two divisions: Junior (U12) and Senior (U14) We do not field a Junior team.  We participate only in the Senior (U14) division.

The Senior (U14) division is coed. We prefer to field a single gender team at this level and offer separate teams for boys and girls.

U14 Law Variations

There are some law variations for this age group that are intended to allow the players to learn the sport safely.  Overall however, the U14 players adhere to the same Laws of the Game as high school, college and adult players.

Some (not all) of the law variations are:

All players must wear a mouth guard.

Middle School matches are 50 minutes long (2 x 25 min halves).

Unlimited substitution is allowed.  Players may return to a match.

We play 15-a-side rugby whenever possible.  We will Reduce to Equate and/or allow Players on Loan when necessary.

Scrums and Line-outs are uncontested unless both coaches agree otherwise. There are some technical restrictions always.

Line-out: Incorrect throw-in (rule 19.7 (a) ) – If a throw-in is incorrect (e.g. not straight), the opposing team will attempt a throw-in.  If the throw-in is again incorrect, then the original team to attempt a throw-in will get a scrum at 15 (i.e. If a Red throw-in is incorrect; then there will be a blue throw-in, if it is incorrect; there will be a red scrum).

2018 U14 Rugby 7s

We run our own Rugby 7s Tournament to open the Rugby Illinois Summer Olympic Rugby 7s season. The 6th annual Midsummer 7s is June 9, 2018.

Rugby Illinois has not yet set the 2018 Summer Olympic Rugby 7s season which generally runs from early June through mid July. We expect the season to look similar to this:

Palatine Midsummer 7s Sat Jun 9
Elgin 7s Sat Jun 23
Great Lakes 7s  Sat Jul 7
Rugby IL 7s  Sat Jul 14

U14 Fall Rugby

Our U14 teams do not play in the Fall Season.

Many of our U14 Boys play Football with PAFA (Palatine Amateur Football Association) in the Fall.

Some of our U14 Girls are participate with PAFA Spirit.

Go Panthers!
